Lake Conroe Thousand Trails

Time to let the new parents be parents and figure some things out without Mama Sparky's well-intentioned advice. The baby is settling into a routine, sort of. It can be a roller coaster ride, that's for sure! Sparky needs to not hover so much......So wise Eldo took Sparky on a short drive to Lake Conroe today, to check out the Thousand Trails park there...Lake Conroe is about a half hour from Spring, TX and the mailing address is Willis, TX.

We have 9 days out of 60 "free" days left on our Thousand Trails zone membership that we signed up for  in January. After we use those 9 days somewhere, we pay 3.00 a day for any Thousand Trails park we stay in for the remainder of the year. We probably won't use the days remaining at the TT park in Lake Conroe, but we wanted to see what it was like for future family visits.

There were lots of pros and few cons about this park....Pros:
Texas Bluebells in a field behind the park
1. Lake Conroe is a 21,000 acre, recreational lake and the park sits right on it, on 128 acres. Kayaking, anyone? Sparky is in! You are close to shopping, the Sam Houston National Forest with the 128 mile Lone Star hiking trail, the Presidential Bush Library, historic Montgomery--geez, every town is "historic" no matter where you go, have you noticed that? And the Bernhardt Winery.

Sites

  • 200 Total Camp/RV Sites
  • 150 50 Amp Service
  • 350 Full Hookups
  • 50 Pull-Thru Sites
  • 16 Rental Trailers
  • 10 Total Rental Units
  • 10 Tent Sites

2. They have lots of amenities....it says parkwide wi-fi, but we're not sure about that, we were not able to pick up the park network on our phones but did not test our computer. Cell phone signal was great...four bars, 4G.

The pool was beautiful and really large...great for lap swimming...adults only from 9:00-10:00 AM, which is always appreciated.

The cons:
1. A lot of the mostly gravel sites are not level. This is not a distorted photo, the cars were really parked downhill, uphill, etc.!

2. The narrow roads leading in and around the park are in TERRIBLE condition! Deep ruts, big potholes, hilly, the roads are full of mounds or at the other extreme-- deep pits of washed out gravel...the gravel sites themselves are narrow, humped and uneven from front to back. It would be difficult to get level on many of the sites, but it can be done, judging by the various block systems and combinations being used under people's wheels.

3. Some of the main areas for activities or meetings outside in open air areas were dirty--trash and junk laying around, floors needing to be swept...It appeared like they could use some more help in maintaining the park.

4. It's an old park---old buildings, outdated facilities, dark and depressing interiors looking like they are from the sixties......

5. You pay an extra 3.00 day for 50 amp service.

6. In one section of the park, the sites were very tight, with side by side rigs using the same pedestal for electric.

Would we stay there? Yes, we would....It's a typical Thousand Trails park.....It needs some TLC, but for free or 3.00 a day, it's a decent park for the money.  Time to head home and see how the new family is holding up.....See you later!

  1. We really enjoyed Sam Houston National Forest. Some wonderful trails.

Looks like a very nice park! Glad you got out of a short time. Mom, dad and son need some bonding time.

  2. Ahhhh it's so hard to leave the wee ones! I know, I know. But time to be in the role of "Granmuddah" instead of on the spot, hands-on, all the time caregiver Nanny! hahaha

  5. Nice review of the park although since I don't own 1000 Trails I probably wouldn't stay there. But I know it's a good heads up for others.
